Arts, Crafts and Story Time!

Join Ms. Mariella for a book club filled with story time, arts and crafts! During each class, a story will be read out loud and discussed as a group. Following the reading, children will participate in a related art project! This book club is for scholars in Kindergarten and first grade. This program is free of charge! Donations to fund this program are always much appreciated. Donations can be made using our Venmo - @Charlestown-Lacrosse.
Engineering/Coding with LEGOs
Wednesdays 1/11, 1/18, 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 3/1, 3/8 4:15PM - 5:30 PM
Each Wednesday students will learn about a new science concept then build different motorized LEGO brick creations using axles, gears, battery packs and motors based on the lesson. Students will each be given an iPad provided by Letyourmindgo with powerpoint instructions to guide them along as they create their builds each week. Once their build is complete students will have time to modify their motorized LEGO brick creation any way they would like! Staff will also demonstrate how special LEGO elements can work together to
create various types of LEGO brick builds. Each week students will apply STEM-based principles and build their LEGObot to help them complete different tasks and challenges. This program is 8 weeks long and will run for one hour and 15 minutes per class.
This after school program is ideal for scholars in rising K through 4th grade. The cost is $250.
Chess Wizards Winter Chess Club- Thursdays from 4:30-5:30

Chess Wizards will be back this winter offering an in-person after school program at our learning center on Thursdays from January 12th through May 5th (14 classes)!
Chess Wizards has been teaching the game of chess since 2002. Join them after school this fall for tons of challenging chess lessons, exciting games, and cool prizes! Whether your child is new to chess or has been playing for a while, they will improve their chess skills, meet new friends, and work out their most powerful muscle - their brain! Each Wednesday, the Chess Wizard program will include fun team chess games (like Corner Chess), snacks, tournaments, and puzzles. All chess materials will be provided by Chess Wizards.

Book Club - Hoot Tuesdays

The Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center will be partnering with the Kennedy Center, Turn It Around and Essem Art this November for our first collaborative Book Club! Our first book will be Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. This book club is geared towards scholars ages 9-11. Our vision for this book club is to create an environment where kids are excited to read! This club will not feel like homework! Each week, kids will read together, discuss the novel and participate in activities related to the text. Towards the end of the course, kids will watch the movie Hoot and compare the book to film. On our very last class, kids will work with Sophia Moon and create a final art project!
Who: Ms. Zaire Richardson, head of Turn It Around Junior, will be leading our class each week! All lessons will be co-planned with CLLC Director, Blake Riley and Kennedy Center Director, Corinne Kielbasa.

About the Book:
Hoot is a 2002 mystery/suspense novel, recommended for ages 9–12, by Carl Hiaasen. The setting takes place in Florida, where new arrival Roy makes two oddball friends and a bad enemy, and joins an effort to stop construction of a pancake house which would destroy a colony of burrowing owls who live on the site. The book won a Newbery Honor award in 2003.
